Changing of the Guard with a Guide, Then Buckingham Palace on Your Own
A guided ceremony followed by a self-guided palace. The guide, from Fun London Tours, who have run Changing of the Guard tours since 2013, takes you through the ceremony outside, then helps you into Buckingham Palace, where an audio guide takes over. Guides do not come inside with you.
The Changing of the Guard is a crowded event, and what a guide buys you is position: the right spot at the right moment, with someone explaining what is going on. Groups are capped at 20 people, and one booking at eight. On a rainy day the ceremony may be scaled down.
Then the palace, the royal residence of King Charles III, which opens to visitors for only a short part of the year. The entrance ticket is included and the guide deals with the ticketing and the crowds, so once inside you take the rooms at your own pace with the audio guide.
Places on this tour and tickets for the palace sell out fast, so it pays to book early. The guide speaks English. Gratuities, food, drink and transport are not included, and the operator does not recommend the tour for travellers with poor cardiovascular health.
Meet outside the front of the Methodist Central Hall on Storey's Gate, about five minutes' walk from St James's Park tube station. The guide carries a flag.
