Guimarães first: the castle, where Portugal began, and then the Duques de Bragança Palace, visited room by room rather than in a lap of the courtyard.

Braga has the rest of the day. Bom Jesus do Monte and the sanctuary above it, then the centre, where the cathedral is the oldest in Portugal, the first one built in the country. The lunch stop falls there too. Further out, the Marian sanctuary at Sameiro on its own hilltop, and the Jardim de Santa Bárbara beside the old Archbishop's Palace.

One thing to settle at booking: lunch is an extra. Pick the fare with lunch included and it is covered. Book without it and lunch is yours to pay for.

Entry to the castle, the palace and Braga Cathedral is in the price, and a local guide is with the group all day.

The day runs about nine hours. The drive back gets into Porto at around 6pm.

The vehicles seat a maximum of eight, and three people have to be booked for the tour to run.
