Guimarães, Braga or Both, and Sameiro, Second Only to Fátima
Two cities that could not be less alike, and both of them decisive in the history of Portugal. This one can be booked as either or as both.
Braga is the religious half. Two thousand years of history, the standing of the religious capital of the country, and a city better known locally for its 18th-century houses, its gardens and its parks than for anything a guidebook lists first. The Sameiro shrine above it draws more pilgrims than anywhere in Portugal except Fátima.
Guimarães is the medieval half, where the nation was founded. Its historic centre is World Heritage, and the sign on the city walls still says as much. The Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, from the 15th century, is part of it.

-
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro
One of the most visited Marian shrines in the country, second only to the Sanctuary of Fátima.
-
Bom Jesus Do Monte
The wood around this sanctuary is what gives it both its beauty and its strangeness. The stairways run up between trees that are centuries old, past one chapel after another, each holding a scene from the Passion of Christ.
-
Braga
Braga, called Bracara Augusta by the Romans, has over 2,000 years of history behind it.
-
Jardim de Santa Barbara
The Jardim de Santa Bárbara is a quiet, historic corner of Braga, and a fair picture of how the old city and the working one sit together.
-
More than a church
More than a church. The Cathedral is a complex of buildings, each one a different demonstration of what people could do with stone.
-
Guimaraes Castle
Called the Cradle City, Guimarães holds a particular place in the history of Portugal.
-
The palace is a prime example of medieval Portuguese…
The palace is one of the clearest examples of medieval Portuguese architecture, and of how the nobility actually lived in the late Middle Ages.

Centro Historico de Guimaraes
Now World Heritage, and the shortest route back to the founding of the Portuguese nation.
